Overview of online translators

Today I'm going to talk about an online translator made by Google.

Google Translate is no doubt one of the most popular among translators and people who just need to translate some information into another language.

To begin with, I'd like to say that it's free. It is easy to use, and you don't need to be a skilful translator to use it.  Its main purpose is to help users to get information from all over the world, from a lot of different countries and even continents.

Let's look inside GT. It provides translations between 58 different languages. Not bad, yeah?

  • Afrikaans
  • Albanian
  • Arabic
  • Belarusian
  • Bulgarian
  • Catalan
  • Chinese
  • Croatian
  • Czech
  • Danish
  • Dutch
  • English
  • Estonian
  • Filipino
  • Finnish
  • French
  • Galician
  • German
  • Greek
  • Hebrew
  • Hindi
  • Hungarian
  • Icelandic
  • Indonesian
  • Irish
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Latvian
  • Lithuanian
  • Macedonian
  • Malay
  • Maltese
  • Norwegian
  • Persian
  • Polish
  • Portuguese
  • Romanian
  • Russian
  • Serbian
  • Slovak

  • Turkish
  • Ukrainian
  • Vietnamese
  • Welsh
  • Yiddish

There are so called "alpha languages" that are tested by GT. They may have less-reliable translation quality than our supported languages. Current alpha languages are:
  • Armenian
  • Azerbaijani
  • Basque
  • Georgian
  • Haitian Creole
  • Latin       Urdu
GT can translate words, sentences and web pages. While doing that it looks for patterns in hundreds of millions of documents to help decide on the best translation for you. This process is called "statistical machine translation".

It is being improved all the time. It provides alternative results of translation, and when you choose the best variant GT learn from your feedback and continue to improve over time.
