The next step in online translation was creation of a new project by Compuserve in 1992.
Languages involved: English, and German (in both directions).
Goal: to produce druft-quality translations.
Objectives: rapid rough information scanning quality translations (general content was more important than the quality).
Compuserve document tranlating service offered an optional post editing service but 85% of all customers refused to use this service. Access to Compuserve was restrected.
In December, 19, 1997 Babelfish translating service emerged. It was free.
Babelfish was the result of a partnership between Systran Software Inc. and a well-known search engine AltaVista.
Initial Babelfish covered 10 language combinations involving 5 languages - English, German, French, Spanish, and Portugese. Nowadays Babelfish supports 14 languages. But it doesn't contain Ukrainian.
